What is all this "music" about Hamilton?

Few years ago, it was all about the Book of Mormon. Since opening off Broadway in 2015, now it is all about Hamilton. So, what’s all this “music” around Hamilton and is being sold out in New York since its off-Broadway days and now in London?

Well if you haven’t heard about it yet, you will definitely will soon. Hamilton is a musical based on Alexander Hamilton’s life, one of America’s Founding Fathers, right-hand man of George Washington during the Revolutionary War, the first Secretary of the Treasury, creator of the New York Bank, and thus laying the structure of Wall Street, and initiator of the New York Post. He died an unfortunate death during a duel with Aaron Burr, the Vice-President at the time.

I went a couple times to New York and tried to find tickets but everything was sold out and minimum 1,000 dollars in the black market. When they said it was coming finally to London, tickets sold out for the whole year again really fast and when a second release of tickets was set, after the completion of the Victoria theatre, I was on my laptop at 12pm, refreshing and refreshing until a got a pair of tickets, so fast like the Flash, for one of the previews.

I go to the theatre, where a huge line formed due to security clearances, take my seat, lights go down, and there is a huge cheering from the crowd as the show is about to start. You would think a show about American history, just now starting in the UK, wouldn’t have the same appeal as it would probably have in US soil. However, no, the cheering was loud, people applauded and sang and stood from their seats to hugely cheer the cast. I experienced an adoration for a show I rarely have experienced; and I have seen most musicals out there…

Ok so now you will ask what was it like? Was it good? It was more than good, it was amazing! It is definitely one of the best musicals I have seen, definitely deserving its awards, so much I have already downloaded and started singing the songs and thinking of going again next year!

Hamilton is different from other musicals as it is mostly hip-hop music (not all songs), where in the lyrics the cast narrates the history in a fun way and is represented by an all races cast for roles you wouldn’t expect it. It is an inspiring story and so relevant to today, as it manages to connect present day America to its past. It is about a man, an immigrant no less, that with his abilities and brain manages to accomplish great things and leave a legacy behind.

Of course I must mention that the creator of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, great talent, was also the creator of In the heights and Bring it On: The Musical, as well as Moana. He was with the original cast when they presented Hamilton in the White House in front of President Obama; big step for a modern musical.

If you find tickets do go! The history it says is transcended worldwide today and affects different people in different ways, as it is very relevant to what is happening to our world today. And most importantly it is inspiring for anyone who wants to accomplish something in this big and connected world we leave in.

Find Hamilton in the Victoria Palace theatre until June 2018.
